My first attempt of building my initial idea for oggb on 2ndlife.
The site ive chosen is the lecture room down below in lvl 0. It has a slope which extend downwards underneath lvl 0.

From my understanding of oggb from the previous inhabit project, i want to develop on the idea of ribbons and lightweight of the glass facade on the exterior of the building. While making "ribbon" sculpties on 3ds max, it turn into feathers instead.
I thought of how feathers are lightweight and also reflect the idea of flow effectively like ribbons. Hence, my idea developed into feathers.

The glass on the exterior of oggb looks as if a bird spreading its wings welcoming the student or any visitors. Hence, i want to create the same effect in my design.
I changed the texture of my "feathers" structure into metallic to convey the idea of a lightweight objet but dense, unable to fly. This is because even tho the curve ribbons on oggb looks lightweight, it's still stuck on the dense oggb building, making it looks heavy and stuck.

The wings created an arch that welcomes the students/passbyers and move according to their movements. This allows the person and the building to interact with each other.
I also want to bring in nature elements into the building.

Project 3- Inhabit

Before i begin my design, i researched Owen G Glen Building (oggb)- the main idea behind it, the background of it.
What i obtained from my research is that, the architect who designed oggb wants to create this place that focus mainly on interaction between people and also the idea of contrast. For instance, the contrast of the lightweight glass "ribbon" on the exterior of oggb vs the blocky black podium the ribbons sit on. I find this interesting and want to develop it incorporate it into my design.

During my observation inside oggb, i came across the ASB atrium stairs. What's interesting here is that people seems to be moving fast and the space itself is use for getting up and down between level 0 and level 1. It is a space with great potential but unappreaciated. However, at the top of the ASB Atrium, there's the sky bridges (social hubs) for teachers and postgraduation. No stairs can be found on level one to get up to these sky bridges. It is obviously that the teachers are keeping public and undergraduate down at level 1 instead of on these sky bridges.
The idea of hierarchy appeared as teachers, postgrads are seperated from undergrads.
Also, level 1 of oggb gives the impression of a cold environment due to the lack of natural lighting while up on the sky bridges, it's bright and cheerful.

Ideas:
To alter the lighting inside oggb. making level 1 ASB Atrium stairs bright, sky bridges dark. This idea derived from the idea of medieval carnival, where during carnival, the rich and powerful gets pick on and challenged by the lower class.
in this case, the teachers and postgrads represents the rich and powerful while the undergrads represents the lower class.

Circulation of oggb: instead of walking straight down or up the ASB Atrium stairs without appreaciating the space, students or public will go up and down the stairs that link all the sky bridges with lvl 1. The idea is also to challenge and annoyed the teachers and postgrads (upper class) which is inspired by medieval carnival.

Interaction: having a stair , device that allows easy access to these sky bridges will increase interaction between teachers and students. These sky bridges will be a place for people to gather and hang out, instead of being a teachers and postgrads only space.

Material: glass and concrete, to create the idea of contrast- bright and dull and also lightweight and dense. The concrete material will be use at the upper floor- lvl 5 and lvl 6 to create a dull, cold atmosphere while concrete will create shadows and no light will be reflected onto its surface. The stairs itself will be made of glass, to create this lightweight effect and reflect light downwards onto lvl 1, making it brighter.

Journal 1 - Area (Milan, Italy)

This journal is published in Milan, Italy. It consists of many different series. I picked one of the series - Italian Hope, as it captured me with it's stunning abstract cover. And also i'm fascinated about italian architectural design, history, and religious belief/myths.

Unfortunately, this particular journal is in italian so i could not understand the journal. However, there are a lot of pictures of buildings and a few pages translated in english. This journal study the newest architecture proposal or buildings in italy and how architects preserve historical buildings. It also showcase the newest style and building era designed by famous italian architects.

One of the article that captured my attention is about the new Milan expo 2015. It's a new project where famous architects -Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind are planning to redesign the town of Milan. Their main purpose is to create functional building to accomodate people yet also recreational places for people to enjoy. The plan for this multipurpose complex is strongly emblematic, with its three futuristic towers: at the crossroads of important routes in the trade fair district, it will offer a spatial landmark and an important attraction due to the daring, highly expressive nature of the architecture.
Journal 2- Harvard Design Magazine

Harvard Design Magazine - architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning

Harvard Design Magazineis published bi-annually by the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and typically explores issues and realities significant to the built environment and the quality of life connected to it.

The magazine's goal is to provide a forum for thoughtful and articulate practitioners, journalists, and academics, primarily from architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design and planning. Essays, images, discussions, interviews, book reviews, and columns of criticism on recent projects, as well as on design, practice and design education, will appear regularly.
Journal 3 - Progress in Planning

The central concern of this study is with the nature and potentials of planning as a basis for action, examined in the particular context of situations experiencing the kind of changes associated with economic development. In other words, this study is about planning and change.

The emphasis of the study is to develop a particular prescriptive solution to the urban problem of Latin America and also the social and political structure of society.
